COZUMEL ISLAND INFORMATION

YUCATAN HISTORY AND CULTURE

The beautiful island of Cozumel is the largest in Mexico and is located in the Caribbean right off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. The island is accessible by direct flights to the Cozumel Airport or by a quick ferry ride from Playa del Carmen. On the western shore of Cozumel is the city of San Miguel where most of the population resides. The majority of the island is covered in dense vegetation is mostly uninhabitable.

Cozumel is believed to be first settled by the Mayan in the 1st millennium AD. The Mayan held the island sacred to their moon goddess, Ix Chel. Many shrines and temples were constructed to worship the Maya Moon Goddess and it is believed Mayan women made pilgrimages to the island seeking to improve their fertility. Currently, the largest remaining ruins are those of San Gervasio, a great destination when visiting the island.

Modern day discovery of Cozumel is credited to the one and only Jacques Cousteau who explored the many beautiful reefs located in the waters around the island. In his day he would describe these diving locations as some of the best in the world. Today, scuba divers and snorkellers alike flock to the island to discover the natural wonders of the reefs.

Come visit the beautiful island of Cozumel and enjoy a fabulous Caribbean vacation.
